Popular Weight-Loss Supplements Recalled

Sunday May 3, 2009
supplementAlthough there is very little evidence to support the use of weight-loss dietary supplements, they are a huge and growing segment of the even larger supplement market. Most of these supplements do not have to go through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval, but later a few of them end up causing problems for people, at which point the FDA steps in to recommend recalling them.

On May 1, 2009, the FDA put out a warning to consumers to stop using most of the products marketed under the brand name "Hydroxycut", one of the top-selling weight-loss supplements on the market. Some of the products have been specifically marketed as being helpful to people on low-carb diets. The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems, mostly related to liver damage, and including one death. Seizures, cardiovascular problems, and a certain type of muscle damage have also been linked to the product-. This is the product list:

  • Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural
If you are using any of these products, the recommendation is to stop taking them immediately, and return any unused products to where they were purchased. Also, be alert for the following: "Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) and brown urine. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching, and loss of appetite." (From the FDA Web site)

The company that makes the products has agreed to recall all these products. They also state that many millions of people have used their products, which makes the seven cases extremely rare.

Are there any problems yet with Resveratrol? I tried it and during the night my heart was pounding so hard I thought I was going to have a hear attack. I do have a thyroid condition – but thought there would be ok since Dr. Oz and Oprah highly recommended them.

As an Author, Personal Trainer and Chiropractor, in light of the recent evidence of harmful and dangerous effects from another diet supplement, it is time for health and fitness professionals to come together against the nonsense of diets and weight loss, once and for all and promote healthy lifestyle changes in their place.
For years people have been chasing after the wares of the diet and weight loss mongers. The results? Dismal! We have seen dramatically worsened levels of health and the number of cases of chronic disease exploding….
The U.S. surgeon General states that over 65% of all adults are seriously overweight to obese. Federal projections estimate that by 2050, close to 1/3 of the population will have type II diabetes, with all its complications in tow, such as blindness, hearing loss, kidney disease, nervous system disorders and amputations of extremities. The World Health Organizations cites that over 72% of all deaths in U.S. are the result of chronic and degenerative diseases resulting from unhealthy practices. W.H.O. cited that such chronic conditions are preventable for the most part and are primarily resulting from unhealthy practices and concluded that the very expensive U.S. drug-based system is not reducing the rate at which conditions become chronic and continue to plague the U.S. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts reports 57% of all illness & injury is a direct result of lifestyle.
Despite this, even more pilla nd potion mongers – even health professionals – are hawking weight loss potions, even while stating “diets don’t work”! It’s reached outrageous! http://www.DrDavidRobinson4Health.com

I am always very sceptical and wary of medication in general, and diet supplements in particular. In my opinion the best way to manage weight and weight loss is by calorie control and exercise. Healthy, fit and natural solutions to losing weight
