The Facts About Ketosis

Thursday October 16, 2008
ketostixThe other day someone forwarded me a health newsletter with the title, "Are Low-Carb Diets Dangerous?" It turned out to lead to an article about the "dangers of ketosis" which had a lot of the misconceptions which are common when talking about ketosis. It also calls the Atkins diet the "most radical of the low-carbohydrate diets", while the same newsletter links favorably to the South Beach Diet. Interestingly, both diets start out with about the same amount of carbohydrate, and both increase carb intake after the first phase to a point where the dieter gets cravings and/or stops losing weight, and then backs down.

The article goes on to point out that the government recommends that we eat at least half of our calories from carbs (apparently, no matter what that does to our blood sugar). Let me see, should I eat what the government tells me to eat (which makes me feel crappy, raises my blood pressure, and I could go on and on) or eat in a way that improves my health and makes me feel great? Decisions, decisions...

I believe a low carb diet is a great way to lose weight, but to keep it off and stay happy we really do need carbs. What the government doesnt say is that these carbs must be complex carbs, preferably sprouted or whole grains and full of fiber. No whites–white flour, white sugar.
