24 Doctors Publish Criticism of Carbohydrate Recommendations for Diabetes

By , About.com Guide   June 27, 2008

Follow me on:

lowTwenty-four physicians and researchers from six countries in Europe and North America have published an article in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism criticizing the current dietary recommendations of the American Diabetes Association and European Association for the Study of Diabetes. Even with mounting evidence of the value of carbohydrate restriction, the organizations have been reluctant to recommend a low-carb diet for diabetes and those at risk for diabetes.

The article focues on five main points, and provides an abundance of evidence to support them. The points are:

1) Carbohydrate restriction improves blood glucose control.

2) Low-carb diets are at least as effective for weight loss as low-fat diets.

3) Substituting fat for carbohydrate in the diet improves markers for heart disease.

4) Reducing carbohydrate improves the features of metabolic syndrome.

5)The benefits of carbohydrate restriction are not dependent on weight loss.

Substituting fat for carbohydrate, and seems to go along with I have read. What type of “fats” seem to work best, anyone know of any research on this?
