Breaking News! ADA May Loosen Stance on Low-Carb Diets
Monday November 12, 2007
November is National Diabetes Month, and if you asked me what would be the best gift to celebrate, it would be that the American Diabetes Association stop being so negative about a diet that clearly helps a lot of diabetics. Well, guess what? It may be happening! While writing this article about low-carb diets and diabetes, I contacted one of the writers of the 2007 version of the guidelines for the ADA. What she told me got me very excited! Although I'm not expecting miracles (such as an outright endorsement of low-carb eating), it sounds like the current negative stance will be dropped, and the first glimmers of acceptance may appear in January when the 2008 guidelines are published. You heard it here first!

Oh my. I don’t pay too much attention to the ADA. Like a lot of other agencies, they seem to have promoted food products such as Campbell’s soup. And of all things–sugar. After that I became very suspicious of this ADA. Depending upon what they say, this may be a good thing. Maybe Campbell’s soup will lower their carb counts in the future. Good work, Laura.
It’s encouraging news, but I’ll beleive it when I see it. At least I’m anxious for the new guidelines to come out. If the ADA just recognizes low carb as a legitimate alternative to low fat, it would be a big step in the right direction.
BTW, I think low carb meets all 4 goals. I find it much more pleasureable than low fat and don’t miss the sugar & starch. Plus, there is scientific evidence that restricting sugar & starch improves glucose control.
