Special Low Carb Ingredients

Though many of these aren't "special" as in "unusual" for me any more, they are special because they help me maintain my weight and BGL: http://www.squidoo.com/living-low-carb-with-special-ingredients.

Tova Products

I am so grateful to have access to Carbquik and Carbolose; with these products I can make bread and buns. Excellent!!

Favorite low carber

Welch's & Ocean Spray both make a really good juice. Welch's Blueberry Pomegranite has 5 cal, 2 carbs, 2 sugars per 8 oz. Also Polaner makes a preserve called Sugar Free w/Fiber. It has 4 carbs, & 3 g of fiber, & 0 sugar. I also use Hood's Cal. Countdown Dairy beverage. It has 90 cal, 3 carb, & 3 sugar. It tastes as good as 2% milk, to me, anyway.

Dreamfields Pasta - the best ever! In the Pig's Eye Low Carb bread - especially toasted because although extremely delicious, a bit "tough" to chew when untoasted. Breyers carb smart ice cream - especially the chocolate!

Banana Blueberry Butterscotch Torani Mango Pumpkin Pie Nature's Best Isopure Zero Carb unflavored Whey Protein Isolate Oat Fiber (Netrition) zero carb and zero calorie, bulks up baked goods And 72 thumbs down for Shirataki noodles! Low Carb Treat

I love to make sugarfree jello and mix cream cheese in with it. Jello has almost no calories of any kind and cream cheese has no carbs. Strawberry, orange and lemon are my fav's mixed with the cream cheese.

So Delicious Sugar Free Fudge Bars

This rich, creamy, sugar free fudge bar is so delicious as the name claims. Only 1 net gram, 80 calories, non dairy, 6 grams of fiber, zero cholesterol, and 5 grams of fat. It makes a great dessert or a filling daytime snack. The problem is they may be difficult to find. Where the brand "So Delicious" non dairy bars can be found at most grocery stores, the sugar free bars are not always carried. I have found them at "Sprouts" in the Dallas, Texas area. They are similar to the Breyers low carb fudge bars, only without the dairy, less calories, less carbs and more fiber. You might want to look for a store location at the website below. http://www.turtlemountain.com/products/so_delicious.html

Honey, I shrunk the carbs!

HoneyTree Sugar-Free Imitation Honey tastes, looks, smells, and feels like real honey. Sure it's made with malitol but a serving has never bothered me. I love the stuff with my hot flax seed almond butter cereal. [Note from Laura: See next Reader Suggestion for maltitol info.]

Atkins Bars (and Maltitol Question)

I too really like the Atkins bars chocolate and orange.I break into thirds and use them as a snack with my green tea a few times a day and always carry them in my handbag for emergencies I would have 1 to 1/3 a day.Lately I have been really unwell very tired aching joints slightly nauseous. I read that maltitol can cause problems. I have had many tests for hypothyriodism but nothing shows up maybe I should go off them Can you tell me what the actual effects of maltitol are ? [Answer from Laura: The main problems with maltitol are 1) it can raise blood sugar almost as much as regular sugar and 2) it causes many people intestinal distress. It may be that the people who experience the least distress have the greatest blood sugar rise, and vice versa. If you search for "maltitol" on this site you'll find more info. It's unlikely to be related to thyroid issues as far as I know. Laura]

Low-carb Bread

Sami's low-carb 7-grain bread has become a nearly indispensable part of my diet. According to its nutrition information, it has two net carbs per slice. It comes from Sami's Bakery in Tampa, FL at a cost of a little over $4 per loaf plus shipping.

For my sweet tooth, it's Healthsmart's Chocolite Protein Bar in Chocolate Turtle flavor (from Netrition), only 115 calories, 4 net carbs, 10 grams fiber, and 9 grams protein...and did I mention delicious? I also like Joseph's low carb pita's...very handy for sandwiches to bring to work.

Favorite Lo-Carb products

Having been on a low-carb/low-sodium regimen for many years, I am always looking for alternatives to diet sodas, which are generally too sweet and artificially flavored to be satisfying, besides which most have added sodium, which I try to avoid. Airforce Nutrisodas (sold through Amazon) come in several very delicious flavors, are low sodium/low-carb and very satisfying whether alone or mixed with other lo-carb fruit-flavored waters or seltzers (they even blend well with prosecco wine for a delightful once-in-a-while spritzer!). Among prepared foods, Marco Polo Bruschetta and Caponata are very tasty and delicious low-carb/low sodium choices for serving with crackers or low-sodium chips, or for mixing in various dishes, as are Trader Joe's flame-roasted or roasted garlic salsas and Enrico's salsas (sodium-free or regular).
