What changes I made
Two and a half years ago I was diagnosed with type II diabetes. After 26 years in addiction recovery I knew exactly what to do so asked my doctor, "What are the solutions?" He said that I could go on medicine, go on medicine and possibly eventually insulin, or I could try something radical, extreme diet and exercise. I took the bait and he referred me to a nutritionist. I left her office with a low carb eating plan. I have followed the plan religiously since. Not only have I lost 35 lbs, feel wonderful (at age 70) I continue to get low glucose readings. I love my plan.
How I did it
I follow a plan built around consuming no more than 180 grams of carbs daily and no more than 60 per meal. I have also found that eating four smaller meals a day, sometimes five, leaves me with consistent energy. I have read books and follow this site regularly for information, tips, and receipts.
Tips & tricks
- Breyer's low carb ice cream has been a savior for this sugar freak. Also, a little bit of something salty I have found, satisfies sugar cravings also. I now no longer deprive myself of anything I truly want, including a little dessert. The secret for me has been to only (and occasionally) have a few bits. After doing this for two years now, I find that those few bites satisfies any craving I may be having for carbs. It also helps to occasionally give yourself a little credit for the efforts that you're making. Stop, smile, and say, "Hey, I'm doing good."
