When a news or media story comes out about research regarding diet, I often try to put it in context for my readers. Here are some of the stories I covered in 2009.
1/3/09 - Control Blood Sugar to Preserve Memory Impact of blood sugar on age-related memory loss, even for non-diabetics.
2/23/09 - Is Sugar Addictive? - I report on a series of studies in rats, talk to the researcher, and muse about sugar addiction. Includes a poll of my readers: Do you think you are addicted to sugar?
3/8/09 - Are All Diets the Same? - I guarantee you that for years to come we are going to be hearing about that study that showed that all diets are the same. Except, suprise! There was no low-carb group in this study in the New England Journal of Medicine that made a huge media splash.
4/2/09 - Atkins Under Attack - A study in the April Jounal of the American Dietetics Association has a lot of problems, among them that it doesn't tell us what people actually ate. And please explain to me how a diet that showed no change in healthy people is "hard on your heart".
4/18/09 - Laura's Report from the 2009 Eastern Obesity Conference -
- Snippets from the conference, including brain studies, and reflections on the different lenses through which people view obesity.4/19/09 Laura's Report from the 2009 Nutrition and Metabolism Conference - Eat enough protein at each meal (eating more doesn't help) to help prevent muscle loss, more about protein in the diet, as well as research on carbohydrate-restricted eating.
6/11/09 - The "Eco-Atkins" Diet - Low-carb vegan group does better on many measures than high-carb vegetarian group. Study has problems, but is interesting.
