When a news or media story comes out about research regarding diet, I often try to put it in context for my readers. Here are some of the stories I covered in 2008.
/16/08 - A Tale of Two Diabetes Studies - Large diabetes studies cause a big splash in the news and are largely misinterpreted, in my opinion.
/9/08 - Low-Carb Science RoundUp - Brief reports about four different studies looking at low-carb diets and blood glucose control and heart disease risk.
/14/08 - Saturated Fat: Not Guilty - Highlights from the 2008 Nutrition and Metabolism Conference, which focused on the science of saturated fat in the diet.6/27/08 - 24 Doctors Publish Criticism of Carbohydrate Recommendations for Diabetes - Twenty-four physicians and researchers from six countries in Europe and North America have published an article in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism criticizing the current dietary recommendations of the American Diabetes Association and European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
/3/08 - Could Low-Carb Diets Help Prevent Memory Loss? - A study showing a relationship between HDL and memory in middle age. Since low-carb diets raise HDL, perhaps we can be of service by promoting it?
/14/08 - Do Low-Fat Diets Make People Hungry? - I look at some of the evidence in an article in the Los Angeles Times about whether part of the problem may be low-fat/high-carb diets.
/17/08 - Low-Carb Diet Wins Another Food Fight - My preliminary report of a large diet study which drew a lot of media attention, and some observations about the media reaction. Follow-up blogs: Is the Media Softening Towards Low-Carb Diets? and An Open Comment to Dr. Dean Ornish plus my full analysis of the study.9/1/08 - Fatness vs Fitness - Is it the fat itself, or other issues which tend to go along with being overweight that puts people at higher health risks? A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine took a look at whether being overweight/obese in and of itself is problematic. Turns out that a big part of the problem is that overweight people tend to be less active.
/20/08 - Killer Carbs: A Key to Overeating? - New research shows that carbohydrates may be messing with our appetite...permanently.
/14/08 - Low-Carb Diets Bad for the Brain? (Don't Worry!) News reports of a study suggested that low-carb diets impair brain function. I reveal the truth about the study, and assign blame for the misinterpretation both to the construction of the study and the media who reported it.
