I was annoyed to see that this site requires your name and MAILING address to enter. I just put “address to follow” and got an email today telling me I had to send the address.
Now if I had won, it would have been no more work to email me then for my mailing address, right?
So they are clearly collecting mailing addresses, not to mention email addresses, for some other purpose.
It’s up to you, but I know I get plenty of junk mail, both online and in my mailbox, already.
Thanks for spreading the word Laura. I appreciate your help again this year!
As for you ravenrose, it’d be nice to get your facts straight before you start accusing people of things they are not doing. Hundreds of people that have entered before in previous contests and can tell you I have NEVER used their personal information for any reason then to send them their prizes. If you don’t like it, don’t enter, but it’s not fair for you to go around making accusations you have no proof on. Laura announced this giveaway last year as well… she did not receive ONE complaint about my misusing personal information. I can promise you that.
Ravenrose, you’re wrong about Amy… she is only trying to get good health info out there with her blog. I won her contest last year and never received anything from her after my prize, no advertisements, no emails, nothing. Some people may do that but she doesn’t, I promise you.
ravenrose,
There is a person behind that site, just so you know. Amy has never used my address or email address to send me junk mail or unsolicited material. NEVER. I’ve been following her blog for a few years now, and I know for a fact that she is only trying to spread great information about low-carb living. By doing the GIVEAWAY, she is offering readers a chance to enter something and possibly win~and that’s all. You don’t have to enter if you are uncomfortable sharing your information, but you shouldn’t be spreading misinformation on the web about Amy or her site. The low-carb community is a vast, yet a somewhat tight-knit, group of people and/or friends who will back Amy 100% on this.
ravenrose, it’s absolutely standard when a prize would be mailed to ask for a mailing address up front. This just makes it a lot easier to do the prize distribution.
I would not be linking to Amy if I did not believe in her integrity, which I back 100%. I am very careful about whom I link to.
I hope this puts the issue to rest.
Laura Dolson
ravenrose needs a snack – I know Amy personally and she would never scam anyone – I have entered plenty of giveaways that required mailing addresses – why get so bent out of shape over a blog giveaway? Puh-leeeze.
ravenrose I suggest you don’t enter anything like this again you obviously don’t have a clue!!! You are entering to get something for FREE from a very nice person!!!
When entering the least you need to do is give information that is needed.
Maybe the reason you get lots of junk in your inbox because you spend most of your time entering competitions. I don’t get junk mail because I don’t do this and if I do enter something afterwards I unsubscribe, but these are from big companies but Amy does not fit into these categories. she BLOGS and offers advice to like minded people and provides a useful service!! She will not gain by keeping peoples addresses!
I appreciate all the support Amy is getting, based on experience. As for sending address, etc, I’m fine with that even if she DID waste a lot of postage and paper with unsolicited follow-up mail. What I don’t want to read just goes in the recycle bin. Once in a long while there IS some piece of junk mail that is worthwhile. When I was in retail, I found two suppliers I would not have known about, by glancing in the trash at the post office. Both remained on my “good list” for more than 10 years. When I closed my store, a phone call to their 800 number took my name off.
Well, I’ve entered many contests and have included my mailing address. I’ve won a Vermont Castings grill and last year I won a case of Zevia from Amy. Unless they have ties with Vermont Country Store, Lands End, and all political parties, I don’t think they’ve sold or shared my mailing information. BTW, if you DO win Fat Head – The Movie, please give her my mailing address …
Yes, I appreciate Amy’s explanation and all those who spoke up for her. I apologize for misinterpreting her request for an address.
I guess the internet exposes us to so many people and organizations trying to take advantage of us that it tends to ramp up the paranoia and cynicism. I should have asked her before saying anything.
Sorry to Amy and to all of you.
Thank you Ravenrose. I appreciate it. I understand why you would be concerned. I do hope you’ll decide to re-enter the giveaway.
