2009 Low-Carb Roundup

2009It's been an interesting year in the low-carb community. On the one hand, reducing carbohydrate is continuing to slowly gain traction in the medical community, both among researchers and clinicians. Notably, the American Heart Association supported carb-reduction for certain patients.

On other hand, even though the media has softened somewhat, many reporters seemed to delight in taking any opportunity to misrepresent research to somehow make it seem that more protein or less carbohydrate in the diet is a bad idea. (Case in point: this recent study on diet and mood.)

Another theme this year was food safety, and simply having access to information about where our food comes from. Since we who follow low-carb ways of eating mostly eat fresh food (rather than processed, packaged food), this is an important issue. Examples: Be Careful Where You Get Your Burgers as well as the important documentary film Food, Inc.
