Much Ado About Fructose

Wednesday October 8, 2008
highLast week CBS News featured a report on the relative dangers of sugar vs high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), with the forces behind sugar and HFCS duking it out in research. I think it's pretty clear that as a people we are overloading ourselves with fructose, but that it's basically immaterial whether that fructose comes from HFCS (at 55% fructose) or sucrose (table sugar) at 50% fructose. Furthermore, as a people we are overloading ourselves with refined carbohydrates, including sugar, period. Arguing about the details is a waste of breath -- just stop eating sugar and other refined carbohydrates! Check out my article on The Dangers of Fructose for the details about fructose.

I agree but HFCS is really so much worse for you than cane sugar. The process in which it is made and the way our bodies react to it is completely different. There is a good description of all of this in Michael Pollin’s ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ if anyone is interested. And there are some great sugar substitutes such as agave nectar that taste great.
