Recalls...and More Recalls
Wow. It seems as though we are awash in food recalls right now. Of course, since low carb diets center on fresh foods, it's important for us to stay abreast of the latest. The following low carb foods have had recent recalls due to bacterial contamination:
Peanut Butter - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on Thursday that salmonella was the source of the food poisoning from certain peanut butters. Currently there are at least two elderly people who may have died from the contamination. At least 329 people in 41 states have been affected.
Bottom Line: If you have any Peter Pan Peanut Butter purchased since May 2006, or any Great Value peanut butter (Walmart brand) with the batch code "2111", throw it away. ConAgra is giving refunds: Discard the contents but send the lid with your name and mailing address to: ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103. Cantaloupes - Dole announced that some of its cantaloupes had been contaminated wtih salmonella. The outbreak was traced to a grower in Costa Rica, and were distributed to stores in the Eastern US and Quebec in early February.
Bottom Line: Take potentially contaminated cantaloupes back to the store. More Information From Dole If you have any questions, call Dole's information line: 800-232-8888.
Oscar Meyer/Louis Rich Chicken Breast Strips - Kraft Foods is recalling over 50,000 pounds of cooked chicken breast strips found to be contaminated with listeria. There are no reported illness resulting from this. Although the affected meats had a "Best When Used By" date of April 19, 2007, they are pulling all such varieties from the shelves with "Best When Used By" Dates of May 28, 2007 or earlier.
Bottom Line: Throw away all Oscar Meyer/Louis Rich Chicken Breast Strips. More information and a list of the affected products from Kraft Foods Call 800-308-1841 if you have any questions.
