People often come to our Low Carb Forum confused. They have been diagnosed as diabetic or prediabetic, and given a diet that is high in carbs. These people find that the traditional diabetic diet is not helping them control their blood glucose, so they look for information on their own, and find that some diabetes experts, such as Richard Bernstein, advocate a low carb diet. This only serves to confuse them more, and no wonder. The American Diabetes Association has admitted that low carb diets help some patients control blood glucose, and yet they do not recommend them because they don't think people can stick with them. They apparently think it is better for people to eat more carbohydrate, and just take more medication to control blood glucose. Well, here's another doctor that doesn't agree. Meet Dr. Mary Vernon, who has great success treating diabetic patients with a low carb diet. Adam Campbell has a great article about her in Men's Health Magazine: "The Cure for Diabetes".

Yes, all the contradictory information is confusing. I am a type 2 diabetic and I had to wade through it all to find better answers. I saw the very low carb diets such as Atkins, zone, Bernstein etc. as on the dangerous side as the either the fat or protein tended to be too high and cause other problems such as increased risks of kidney failure, heart disease etc.
The ADA methods of carb counting and treating all carbs the same was ineffective. After a lot of internet searching and trial and error. I was able to maintain non-diabetic labs without meds.
First came the concept of the PCF ratio in which all calories are accounted for and all protein, carbohydrate and fat are tracked and balanced. This is different than just about any body is doing. This needs to be further modified with The concept of low glycemic foods, Good Fats /Bad Fats, Anti Inflammatory foods, foods that help control blood glucose and a number of other concepts that main stream medicine is ignoring even though they are available all over the internet and work. As I said, I am a type 2 diabetic. I created http://www.Diabetic Diet-Secrets.com to try to make it easier for anyone else who needed this information and wants to know how to control blood glucose with diet instead of meds which is less effective and has too many undesirable and sometimes dangerous side effects.
