One of my favorite things about this time of year is that we start getting our weekly “farm box” – organic vegetables and fruit, straight from the farm, whatever is growing that week. There is nothing like the flavor of fresh-picked veggies and fruit. And because we’ve “cut out the middle man”, the produce costs less than it would in the store. Community Supported Agriculture is spreading like wildfire, and chances are you have access to the same thing in your community. It benefits the farmer and the consumer, saves the fuel required to transport food hundreds or thousands of miles, and creates a bond with the earth and our food that we can lose touch with in our day to day lives (it’s great for kids that way). I also like it because it introduces me to foods I wouldn’t ordinarily have tried, such as green garlic, purslane, and rutabagas. If you don’t want to commit to a season of veggies, Farmer’s Markets provide some of the same advantages.
